September 2014 Manitoba Party Standings

Winnipeg – A new Probe Research survey conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press and CTV Winnipeg shows the Manitoba Progressive Conservative party with a comfortable 12-point advantage over the governing New Democrats.
The Progressive Conservatives currently have the support of 42 percent of decided Manitoba voters, down slightly from the level of support the party recorded in June (-3%). Three-in-ten decided voters, meanwhile, would cast a ballot for the New Democratic Party in a hypothetical general election (30%, down from 32% in June). One-in-five voters (20%) now prefer the provincial Liberals – which marks a slight increase (+4%) since the last Probe Research survey in June. Eight percent of decided voters would cast a ballot for the Green Party or other parties not represented in the Legislature.

Majority of Manitoba Support Euthanasia
Winnipeg – A majority of Manitoba adults support the right of patients who are terminally ill or who have severe disabilities to end their own lives, a new survey of 1,010 Manitobans conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press reveals.

Manitobans were asked to weigh in on whether they support euthanasia in principle and whether or not they support Manitoba following Quebec’s lead and introducing legislation which would allow physicians to help people with terminal illnesses or severe disabilities end their own lives.

Political Preferences And Pride in Canada

Winnipeg – The level of patriotism expressed by Manitobans depends greatly on which political party they intend to support, a new Probe Research survey conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press reveals.
Manitobans who support the provincial New Democrats or Manitoba Liberals were more likely than Progressive Conservative party supporters to report that they are less proud of Canada as they were five years ago (39% and 29% respectively, versus just 15% of PC supporters who say they are no longer as proud of Canada as they were in the past). These PC party supporters, on the other hand, were more likely to report that they are just as proud of Canada today as they were five years ago (52%, versus 39% among NDP supporters and 38% among Liberal supporters).

Manitoba NDP Reaches New Low In Voter Support

Winnipeg – After an acrimonious spring session in the Manitoba Legislature, a new survey by Probe Research Inc. for the Winnipeg Free Press shows the province’s governing New Democratic Party is growing increasingly unpopular with Manitobans as support for the opposition Progressive Conservatives continues to increase.
Province-wide, 46 percent of Manitobans report that they would cast a ballot for a Progressive Conservative candidate in a hypothetical provincial election, up four points from 42 percent in April. Fewer than three-in-ten decided voters, on the other hand, would now back a NDP candidate (28%, -7% versus April). This is the lowest level of support for the NDP that has ever been recorded in a Probe Research-Winnipeg Free Press Manitoba Omnibus survey, which has been conducted quarterly since 1997.

April 2013 Manitoba Party Standings - NDP Support Erodes
Winnipeg – Manitoba’s governing New Democrats are slipping further behind as the Progressive Conservative Party consolidates its position as the most popular party in Manitoba.

A new Probe Research Inc. survey conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press shows that the NDP and PCs are now tied in Winnipeg while the PCs continue to hold a double-digit advantage outside the provincial capital. This telephone survey of 1,001 Manitoba adults was conducted between April 2 and April 14, 2013 – just prior to the release of the April 16th provincial budget.

Selinger, NDP Maintain Their Popularity; New PC Leader Pallister Still Unknown
Winnipeg, Manitoba - A new Probe Research/Winnipeg Free Press survey shows Premier Greg Selinger continues to receive a solid nod of approval from Manitobans for his performance in office, while newly acclaimed Progressive Conservative leader Brian Pallister has yet to be recognized by many voters.

A majority of Manitoba adults (50%) approve of the performance of Mr. Selinger,  with three-in-ten (29%) disapproving of Mr. Selinger’s performance and 21 percent who were either unwilling or unable to comment on Mr. Selinger’s work in the province’s highest political office.

Mr. Pallister - who was recently acclaimed as the new leader of the PC party - received job approval ratings of only 33 percent (compared to 19% who disapproved of his job performance), with nearly one-half of Manitoba adults (48%) indicating they were either unfamiliar with Mr. Pallister or felt they needed more time to fully assess his performance.

Manitoba Politics Stuck In A Holding Pattern (June 2012 Provincial Party Standings)
Winnipeg - In the absence of new leaders or a dynamic provincial political scene, Manitoba voters would essentially vote the same way as they did in the October 2011 election if they had to do it all over again, suggests a Probe Research Inc. telephone survey of 1,002 Manitoba adults.

The survey, undertaken exclusively for the Winnipeg Free Press, shows that voting intentions are essentially the same now as they were when Manitobans voted nine months ago, with the NDP narrowly leading at 44 percent (versus 47% in the election), the PCs close behind at 40 percent (versus 43% in the election) and the Liberals a distant third at 13 percent (versus 8% in the election). The differences between these findings and the results of the 2011 election are almost all within the survey's margin-of-error.

Tories Take Post-Election Lead Over NDP
Winnipeg – Even in the absence of a new leader (or very many candidates vying to replace the outgoing party boss) and without a chance of forming government for another three-and-a-half years, Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative party has managed to leapfrog the governing New Democratic Party and become the top choice of decided Manitoba voters. This is according to a Probe Research telephone survey of 1,000 Manitoba adults conducted exclusively for the Winnipeg Free Press.

Six months after the NDP won a fourth majority government, the PCs have edged slightly higher in popular support, from 43 percent in the 2011 election to 45 percent today (+2%). Support for the NDP, meanwhile, has dropped significantly – from 47 percent when ballots were cast last October to just 40 percent in this current sounding (-7%). Support for the Liberal Party (+2%, from 8% to 10%) and other parties (5%, up from 3%) has remained essentially stable since last fall’s provincial election. Overall, one-in-four voters (25%) are undecided or refuse to say which party they would support in a hypothetical election.

Conservatives Enter Campaign With Big Lead (March 2011 Federal Standings)
Winnipeg – As the starting gun sounds on the 2011 federal election campaign, the Conservative Party enters the race well ahead of its rivals in Manitoba, a Probe Research Inc. March telephone survey of 1,000 Manitoba adults conducted exclusively for the Winnipeg Free Press reveals. The party’s big lead, however, is mostly based on its dominance in its rural Manitoba stronghold. Within Winnipeg, it is a substantially closer race.

NDP’s Anti-McFadyen Ads Backfired As Voters Warm To The PC Party
Winnipeg – Political parties broadcast television ads which criticize their opponents because they are seen to be effective. But a Probe Research survey of 1,001 Manitobans conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press suggests that the first salvo fired by the NDP against Progressive Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen may have backfired on the New Democrats, as those who recall the NDP‟s “Know Hugh” ad campaign are more likely to have a better opinion of the Progressive Conservatives than those who did not see these ads.

Voters were asked if they had recently seen, read or heard any advertisements about Progressive Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen. Slightly more than one-half (57%) said they had seen these ads, which were broadcast on local television stations and on the Internet as well as complemented by direct mail and social media campaigns. More than one-third (37%) had not seen the ads and an additional six percent were unsure whether they had seen them or not. None of these survey respondents had been exposed to the more recent ads by the Progressive Conservatives that feature Hugh McFadyen rebutting NDP criticisms of his previous policy statements...

Interestingly, those who recalled these advertisements critical of PC leader Hugh McFadyen were more likely to have a higher opinion of the Progressive Conservative party today than those who did not recall these ads (17%, versus 7% respectively). There is virtually no difference in the proportion of voters who say their view of the PCs has declined when looking at those familiar and unfamiliar with the anti-McFadyen ads (17%, versus 15% respectively). However, those who were aware of the ad were more likely to have a more-negative impression of the NDP today than those who did not see the ad (35%, versus 19% respectively).

Progressive Conservatives Take A Slight Lead (Dec. 2010 Provincial Party Standings)
Winnipeg – Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives have opened up a slight lead over the governing New Democrats, but the race between the two major parties remains very close, a new Probe Research Inc. telephone survey conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press reveals.

With ten months to go until Manitobans head to the polls, the Progressive Conservatives continue to be favoured by more than four-in-ten decided adult voters (42%, unchanged from September). Support for the NDP has decreased slightly since September (from 40% to 38%), while there has been a slight uptick in the proportion of adult citizens would cast ballots for the Manitoba Liberals (15%, +2% versus September).

Nearly one-half of those surveyed (49%) also believe it’s time for a new government in Manitoba, while one-third (34%) said the NDP should be re-elected to a fourth term. Fewer than one-in-five (17%) did not indicate a particular preference regarding which party should come into power following the next provincial election.

Conservatives, Liberals Rebound In Manitoba: NDP Loses Ground (Sept. 2010 Federal Party Standings)
Winnipeg – Federal Conservatives and Liberals in Manitoba have reason to cheer while New Democrats and Greens might be licking their wounds after a new Probe Research Inc. poll for the Winnipeg Free Press shows the Conservatives and Liberals have recovered from a slump in voter support in the Keystone Province.

The governing Conservatives continue to enjoy a large lead over their rivals in Manitoba, with nearly one-half of voters (47%) now indicating they would cast ballots for Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s party. As the graph on the following page shows, Conservative support has increased by three percentage points in the past three months (from 44% in June to 47%). Meanwhile, Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals have leapfrogged the NDP into second place, climbing to 25 percent support in Manitoba (up from 21% in June).

Aboriginal Voter Intentions in Manitoba
Winnipeg – A survey of Manitoba’s Aboriginal voters reveals that indigenous people within the province overwhelmingly prefer the New Democratic Party at the provincial level, but spread their support more evenly when voting in federal elections.

Manitoba Provincial Party Support
Winnipeg – Premier Gary Doer’s sudden retirement as leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party has not affected the party’s popularity with Manitoba voters, a new Probe Research Inc./Winnipeg Free Press survey finds.

The provincial New Democrats remain the most popular party in the province, with 45 percent of Manitobans stating they would vote for the NDP in a hypothetical provincial election. For the NDP, which will choose a new leader October 17, this represents no change since the last sounding conducted in June 2009.

With the support of 38 percent of decided voters, the Hugh McFadyen-led PCs have increased their popularity by two percentage points and have shrunk the NDP’s advantage from eight percentage points to seven. The Liberals, meanwhile, remain far behind both parties, with just 12 percent of decided voters backing the party led by Jon Gerrard (-2% from June). Four percent of respondents would back other parties not represented in the Legislature, while 15 percent of voters were undecided.
